Grosse Pointe, Mich. -

Detroit area residents are encouraged to "shop small" at local businesses following the frenzy of Black Friday.
The chambers of commerce in Grosse Pointe and Dearborn will join the Small Business Saturday movement that supports local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods.
Some businesses in the Grosse Pointes are offering complimentary gifts with purchases, discounts and gift cards to lure shoppers through their doors. The Dearborn Area Chamber will distribute $25 American Express Gift Cards Saturday to customers at businesses in that city.
Thousands of small stores, restaurants, spas and other businesses across the U.S. also are offering their own discounts and promotions.
American Express created the day three years ago, it says, to help small businesses struggling during the recession.
