The family of a Wayne State University football player is asking for the public's help to find whoever is responsible for gunning him down outside club in Detroit earlier this month.

Courtney "Cortez" Smith, 20, was shot and killed May 5 outside Club Envy on West Larned Street. Police said shots were fired when an argument broke out, killing Smith and injuring one other person.

Smith was a junior at WSU and played the position of cornerback for the school.

During a news conference on Monday, held in partnership with Crime Stoppers, Smith's mother said she had a message to the community.

"He was the love of our life and the love of so many. Please come forward if you any information," Beverly Smith said. "You be the responsible one. You be the one to take responsibility. Even though someone has done this crime, you can make a start today."

Smith's teammate, Myles McNichols, also spoke at the news conference. He said Smith was not only his teammate, but also a good friend.

"Anything you can give, please help us solve this crime and not let a good man's life be ended by the streets," McNichols said.

The reward for information in the case is $2,500. It has been raised $1,000 until midnight Monday.

Anonymous tips can be left with Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAKUP.
