A semi overturned in the eastbound lanes of I-696 Monday morning, blocking several lanes.

The accident happened at about 6 a.m. just east of I-75.

Witnesses reported that a Ford Mustang was stopped on eastbound I-696 for unknown reasons, when it was struck in the rear by a semi-truck which was travelling eastbound on I-696. The semi-truck overturned blocking the right lane. Both drivers were transported to a local hospital with non-life threating injuries. Traffic lanes were closed on eastbound I-696 from 6:10 to 10:45 AM. The ramp to Couzens Ave. remains closed for fuel spill cleanup.

State troopers are continuing to investigate the incident.  Investigation on scene revealed that seatbelts were utilized and that alcohol was not a factor in the crash

The semi driver is OK but a woman in another vehicle that was involved was taken to the hospital. The extent of her injuries weren’t immediately known.
