Give fewer gifts: This doesn't mean you need to be a Scrooge -- just get a little more creative. Give homemade food, tickets to a concert, gift certificates to a spa or a donation to a favorite cause in the receiver's name. You may be surprised to find your neighbors and, maybe even, relatives are less stressed because they have joined the going number of people turning to re-gifting.

     According to a Birchbox survey of 3,000 women, 49 per cent will re-gift unwanted presents this year.

By contrast, 64 per cent of people think it is rude to save and re-use wrapping paper.
