Police say a woman from Grosse Pointe Park was followed and robbed outside of her home.

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. -

Grosse Pointe Park police are warning residents to be on alert after a woman was followed home from a local store and attacked in her own backyard.

It happened around 10:30am Sunday morning on the 1100 block of Wayburn Street as the 84-year-old woman was walking home.

Grosse Pointe Park police told Local 4 that the attacker followed her into her backyard after she bought a newspaper at her local store. He put his hand over her mouth and went through her pockets then ran away when he didn't find anything.

"It's very rare for us to have something like this, especially on a Sunday morning," said Grosse Pointe Park Police Chief David Hiller. "Our cars were there within a minute, in the area surrounding, and we were just unable to locate anything."

Now residents are being warned to be on high alert and take note of anything suspicious.

"I've lived here for 30 years and I'm stunned," said Ann Murphy who lives in the neighborhood. "Things are really different now. You have to be careful."
