Police in Michigan's Upper Peninsula say they believe a 15-year-old boy was tortured and sexually abused while kept inside an Escanaba home for about four years.

Escanaba police Capt. Jamie Segorski says the boy was rarely allowed to leave a small room on the second floor. He says the room was constructed out of tarps and had only a space heater.

Segorski says the boy was discovered Friday after a relative who hadn't seen him asked police for help. The teen's mother and her boyfriend are in the Delta County jail on charges of torture, child abuse and criminal sexual conduct.

Defense attorneys declined to comment Thursday. Segorski says shocked neighbors didn't know there was a boy living there. The next court hearing is on April 25.
