Mistrial Declared In 90-Year-Old's Abduction Case

Taylor Man Goes Missing In July Incident, But Found Unharmed In Hotel

TAYLOR, Mich. – Two men will be headed back for a second trial next year on charges they abducted a 90-year-old Michigan man from his nursing home.

Floyd Pickerell went missing July 19 from an adult care facility on Telegraph Road in Taylor. Surveillance video released by police showed Pickerell being hoisted over a fence at the facility by two men and being driven away.

He was found unharmed three days later in an Ypsilanti hotel.

Darrell Shelby Howard, 50, of Detroit, Ted Robert Tomes, 25, of Ypsilanti and Alfred Khattar, 54, of Lincoln Park were charged with unlawful imprisonment in connection with the abduction.

The defense has argued that the men, who claim to be longtime friends of Pickerell, were only trying to remove him from bad living conditions. The prosecution has said money was a motive for the incident.

Howard pleaded guilty and is set to be sentenced on Nov. 7. But a mistrial was declared for Tomes and Khattar, who are father and son. They're new trial is scheduled to be start Jan. 24.
