Man shot dead in River Rouge

22-year-old man shot to death at Beechwood, Eaton streets in River Rouge

RIVER ROUGE, Mich. – A 22-year-old man was shot dead Monday at Beechwood and Eaton streets in River Rouge.

Dionthe Sweeney was gunned down in the morning by a spray of bullets. Red flags mark the spots where police found shell casings.

Two women at the scene, who identified themselves as the victim's mother and aunt, said he was visiting his girlfriend when the shooting happened. They said Sweeney was a security guard at Ford Field.

"Nobody thinks this is drugs or anything. This is an innocent young man who led a decent life," said the victim's aunt, Patricia Livingston. "To be cut down like a dog! To be cut down like a dog by your own people! Wake up black people!"

Police do not believe the shooting was random. They say a semi-automatic gun was used.

Michigan State Police are assisting with the investigation.
