A 36-year-old man died Thursday night when the truck he was in slammed into a tree while he was fleeing Southfield police.

Local 4 has learned that an Oakland County Alcohol Enforcement unit was on patrol when it spotted the speeding driver in the area of 14 Mile and Telegraph roads and tried to pull him over.

He sped off down Telegraph Road, eventually fleeing into the area of Evergreen and 9 Mile roads, losing control and crashing into a tree.

The pickup truck was crumpled around the tree.

The victim is from Birmingham.

Investigators were still on the scene early Friday morning.
