— Army Sgt. Mark H.Schoonhoven, 38, of Plainwelldied Jan. 20 at BrookeArmy Medical Center at FortSam Houston, Texas, from woundshe sustained when insurgentsattacked his unit with animprovised explosive device onDec. 15, 2012 in Kabul,Afghanistan. He was partof the 32nd TransportationCompany, 43rd Sustainment Brigade,4th Infantry Division, based atFort Carson, Colo.

— Army Spc. ZacharyShanafelt, 24, of Grand Rapidsdied Nov. 21, 2012, atWalter Reed Hospital inWashington of injuries hesustained in a 2011 accidentwhile serving as a combatmedic in Afghanistan's Fariyabprovince.

— Army Sgt. Robert J.Billings, 30, a 2001 graduateof Morley-Stanwood High Schoolin Mecosta County, Mich., anda resident of Clarksville, Va.,died Oct. 13 when insurgentsattacked his unit with animprovised explosive device inSpin Boldak, Afghanistan. He wasassigned to the 5th Battalion,20th Infantry Regiment, 3rdStryker Brigade Combat Team, 2ndInfantry Division from JointBase Lewis-McChord, Wash.

— Army Pfc. Shane W.Cantu, 20, of Corunna diedAug. 28 in Charkh ofwounds suffered when he washit by shrapnel. Cantu wasassigned to 1st Battalion, 503rdInfantry Regiment, 173rd AirborneBrigade Combat Team, Caserma Ederle,Vicenza, Italy.

— Navy Petty Officer DavidJ. Warsen, 27, of Kentwoodwas among seven Americans andfour Afghans killed in aBlack Hawk helicopter crashnortheast of Kandahar, Afghanistan,on Aug. 16. He wasassigned to a West Coast-basednaval Special warfare unit.

— Army 1st Lt. ToddLambka, 25, of Fraser diedAug. 1, in Paktika provincefrom injuries suffered when animprovised explosive device detonated.Lambka was assigned to 1stBattalion, 28th Infantry Regiment,4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team,1st Infantry Division at FortRiley, Kan.

— Army Spc. Kyle McClain,25, of Macomb County's ShelbyTownship, died Aug. 1, inSalim Aka. McClain was assignedto 1433rd Engineer Company,507th Engineer Battalion, 177thMilitary Police Brigade inKalamazoo.

— Marine Gunnery Sgt. DanielJ. Price, 27, died July29 while conducting combatoperations in Badghis province.The military listed his hometownas Holland, and his parentslive in the Zeeland areanearby. He was assigned to1st Marine Special OperationsBattalion at Camp Pendleton,Calif.

— Marine Sgt. Justin M.Hansen, 26, of Traverse Citywas killed July 24 incombat operations in Badghisprovince. He was part ofthe 2nd Marine SpecialOperations Battalion from CampLejeune, N.C.

— Army Staff Sgt. MatthewJ. Leach, 29, of Ferndaledied June 26 in Kandahar,Afghanistan. The cause of deathwasn't immediately announced. Hewas part of the 1/334thRegiment, 1st Brigade, 104thTraining Division based inFraser.

— Army Staff Sgt. RobertA. Massarelli, 32, a 1998graduate of East Kentwood HighSchool in Kentwood, was killedJune 24 in an explosionin Kandahar. His parents livein Hamilton, Ohio. He waspart of the 96th TransportationCompany from Fort Hood, Texas.

— Marine Pfc. Steven P.Stevens II, 23, of Detroitdied June 22 while conductingcombat operations in Helmandprovince. He was assigned tothe 1st Combat EngineerBattalion, 1st Marine Division,I Marine Expeditionary Force atCamp Pendleton, Calif.

— Army Sgt. Joseph Lilly,25, of Flint died June14 from injuries he sustainedJune 12 when he washit by an improvised explosivedevice while on patrol inAfghanistan. He was a combatengineer serving with the 18thEngineer Company from Joint BaseLewis-McChord, Wash.

— Army Spc. Vilmar GalarzaHernandez, 21, of Salinas,Calif., died May 26 inin Kandahar province when enemyforces attacked his unit withan improvised explosive device.His wife is from Muskegon,Mich. He was assigned tothe 4th Battalion, 23rd InfantryRegiment of the 2nd StrykerBrigade Combat Team of the2nd Infantry Division at JointBase Lewis-McChord in Washingtonstate.

— Army Capt. Bruce KevinClark, 43, a former residentof Spencerport, N.Y, andAddison, Mich., died May 1in Tarin Kowt. He wasa nurse assigned to ACompany, Troop Command atWilliam Beaumont Army MedicalCenter in El Paso, Texas.His wife was in Texaschatting with him via Skypewhen he collapsed.

— Air Force Tech. Sgt.Matthew S. Schwartz, 34, ofTraverse City was killed Jan.5 along with two otherairmen when insurgents attackedtheir vehicle with an improvisedexplosive device in Helmandprovince. He was part ofthe 90th Civil Engineer Squadronfrom F.E. Warren Air ForceBase, Wyo.
