A popular student athlete at Garden City High School has died after being hit by a minivan in Westland.

Vincent Meiers, 18, was walking home the evening of Feb. 28 after an awards ceremony when he was hit along Middlebelt Road near Warren.

Police said it appears Meiers was walking close to the roadway because there was too much ice and snow on the sidewalk.

The 42-year-old Livonia woman who hit him with a Chrysler minivan stayed on the scene.

Meiers was rushed to a hospital, but died Saturday.

The senior was on the football team.

Friend Chris Lloyd said he was shocked to hear of Meiers’ death.

“He was an awesome person in general. Great smiles,” Lloyd said. “He was one of those people who just walks into a room and makes everybody feel better.”

Even though the incident appears to be an accident, it’ll still be handed over the prosecutor’s office for review.
