Former public works director in Center Line accused of embezzlement

Scott Baker, former public works director for Center Line, is charged with embezzling $6,000 from scrapping old city water meters

CENTER LINE, Mich. – The former public works director of Center Line is accused of embezzling $6,000 from the city by scrapping old city water meters in a program he started in the city several years ago.

Scott Baker is currently the public works director in Ft. Meyers, Florida. Baker applied for the job just as the investigation into his actions in Center Line was getting underway two years ago.

When he applied for the job he listed the water meter project in Center Line as an accomplishment.

Florida officials knew nothing about the investigation because their background check only covered the counties where he lived the past seven years, and not where he worked.

Baker eventually told Ft. Meyers officials about the investigation, but he was not let go.

Baker has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is expected to be back in court at the end of May.
