Family hit by suspected drunk driver

2-year-old killed, 8-year-old seriously injured

A little boy is dead and his sister critically injured after a suspected drunk driver ran into the family's car in a head on collision.

The crash happened Sunday night on Hoover road on Detroit's east side.
"It kind of sounded like an explosion. I can't describe it, a big boom sound," said Patience Gilbreath who heard the crash.

According to police, a suspected drunk driver lost control and slammed into a car carrying a mother and her children.

A two-year-old boy was killed and his eight-year-old sister is in critical condition. The mother of the two children was not hurt.

"I saw the mother she was hysterical and the police were trying to get the baby's pulse. It was horrible," said Gilbreath.

Gilbreath said she ran down the street to the nearest fire department begging for help. Police raced to the scene and so did neighbors like Gilbreath.

"The whole community that was out here stuck together. It was sad because I actually saw them putting the babies into the ambulance," said Gilbreath.

The 62-year-old suspected drunk driver of Shelby Township was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, but is currently in police custody. Police are still waiting on preliminary breath test results for the driver.
