Excessive Heat Warning for Detroit and much of Michigan

Hazardous heat and humidity return

DETROIT – An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for Detroit and Southeast Michigan Tuesday as temperatures skyrocket from the 70s in the morning to 100 or more in the afternoon. Dangerous heat indices will reach 105 or more.

Detroiters and all Michiganders in the southern lower peninsula must limit all outdoor activity, remain inside air conditioned buildings and have plenty of water to drink.

Anyone venturing outside should wear light, loose-fitting clothes and refrain from any strenuous activity. Construction workers and others who have to work in the elements should take frequent water breaks.

JustWeather.com and Local 4 News will be tracking temperatures and the heat index all day, and ClickOnDetroit.com has a list of local cooling centers.

Tuesday night remains warm and humid with lows near 75.

A cold front will arrive Wednesday brings showers, thunderstorms and air that is not as hot.  Highs will be in the middle and upper 80s.  Storms may have gusty winds and hail, and the chance of rain is 50 percent.

The rest of the work week will be much more comfortable, warm and mostly sunny. Thursday's highs will be in the low 80s. Friday afternoon will be in the middle 80s.  Highs return to 90 degrees by the end of the weekend.

The U.S. is experiencing a drought it has not seen since the 1950s.  Southeast Michigan needs water, too, but Wednesday will be the only day delivering it.
