A unit inside 10-story Detroit apartment building burned Friday evening.

Detroit firefighters were battling flames at a 10-story apartment building Friday evening in the West Village neighborhood on the city's east side.

The fire was at the Parkstone Apartments at Agnes and Parker streets. The fire broke out on the third floor. Firefighters were able to contain it to one unit.

Residents say they didn't feel the heat but they smelled the smoke.

"It was very faint at first. And I thought maybe it was something in the apartment and then it became very strong," said resident Meghan Atkinson. "It was all in a matter of 2 to 3 minutes."

People were trapped on upper floors momentarily due to smoke. Firefighters were able to reach them and help them.

First responders helped residents evacuate the building.

Six people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Dozens of residents were allowed to return home Friday night.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
