Detroit Mayor Dave Bing leaves hospital to recuperate at home following surgery

Mayor undergoes surgery for perforated colon

DETROIT – Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has been released from a hospital more than a week after undergoing surgery to correct a perforated colon.

Bing's office says Monday the 68-year-old mayor is expected to be out of the office for about three weeks.
He will recuperate at home, but will continue communicating with his staff about the city's daily operations.
Bing was admitted to Henry Ford Hospital on March 22 after feeling discomfort following dental treatment. Doctors had expected his stay to last five to seven days.
Deputy Mayor Kirk Lewis has been serving as mayor in Bing's absence. Lewis has been one of the city's lead negotiators with the Gov. Rick Snyder's office on a consent agreement that would head off the state's appointment of an emergency manager over Detroit's finances.

Local 4's Dr. Frank McGeorge on mayor's condition

Local 4 Doctor Frank Mc George who works at Henry Ford Hospital where the mayor is recovering, said he has no first hand knowledge about his case, but believes stress could be a factor.

"Stress causes your body to react differently. Your immune system becomes weaker, and you suddenly ignore symptoms that you might have paid more attention to because you think its just stress when in fact it is far more serious," said McGeorge.
