DETROIT -

Detroit workers plan to burn weeds and other vegetation at two city parks.

Controlled burns Wednesday at Eliza Howell and Rouge parks on the city's west side are designed to kill off several invasive plant species and germinate native plant seeds in the soil.

The Rouge Park burn will start about 11 a.m. Crews will start the burn at Eliza Howell Park about two hours later.

The fire department will be on hand to monitor the burns.

Controlled burns were held last week on Belle Isle in the Detroit River and at some other Detroit parks.
