BLOOMFIELD HIILS, Mich. – Andover High School is a one-time prep powerhouse which won't play football again.
The Barons of Bloomfield Hills lost badly in their first three games this season and on Tuesday only a handful of players showed up to practice.
After this season, the Andover and Lahser High School teams are set to merge into one, marking the end of an era.
"I'm extremely disappointed by the fact that we had to take down the team," said Perry Klemansky, a wide receiver for Andover. "A lot of people thought it was coming. I kept a positive attitude the whole way through it."
School leaders say the decision was all based on safety.
"Monday we had 12 kids," said director Mike Cowdrey.
Klemansky was one of the 11 players dressed for practice Tuesday. He's now suited to go play on the combined junior varsity team with Lahser High School.
"I'm kind of disappointed more just that we don't have the school spirit," said student Sam Kirshembaum
School leaders are working with coaches from the other teams Andover was scheduled to play.
"I am glad I got to see our team win this homecoming," said Marcus Boyd, an Andover student.
