DETROIT – Bernard Kilpatrick was speaking out, denying he spent $5,000 from the Kilpatrick civic fund on a vacation.
However, there is a question about $300 from the fund used to cover a hotel bill.
Bernard Kilpatrick, former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's father and fellow defendant in the federal trial, says he did nothing wrong.
But on Tuesday in court, the jury heard a recorded conversation in which the former mayor's father is captured on the phone asking a local businessman for $5,000 toward the civic fund. Some of the money, the prosecution says, was used to cover the cost of a trip to Florida. His attorney says they have only hear part of the story.
"Things come out in stages and you're just going to have to listen to the whole story. I don't want to comment on a piecemeal," said attorney John Shea.
The civic fund was brought into the spotlight again. It is being alleged that Bernard Kilpatrick misused the funds.
"If he's using those funds for purposes that are not supposed to be used for. In other words he is not using them for community developments, then there's a problem," said Legal Expert Todd Flood.
