Fire at abandoned home spreads to neighboring houses

DETROIT -

The Detroit Fire Department is investigating a Saturday morning fire as arson on the city’s west side.

An arsonist set fire to an abandoned house around 3 a.m. Saturday near Woodmere Street and Norman Street, police say. The fire spread quickly to the surrounding occupied homes, setting the homes on fire and endangering the families inside.

The families inside the occupied homes saw the flames and smelled the smoke, and were able to escape from the blaze in time. Only one woman was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, and no other injuries were reported.

Both families were displaced by the fires, and the Salvation Army has been helping them with needs they may have.
