Angels' Night 2011 Weekend Fires Were Down

Mayor's Office Says 52 Fire Reported Sunday, Monday

DETROIT – Detroit Mayor Dave Bing said fires for this year's Angels' Night period were down nearly 50 percent from last year.

Bing said there were 94 total fires reported during the three-day weekend. In 2010, there were 169. He also said there were 123 juvenile curfew violations and 53 parental responsibility tickets issued.

The mayor said 19,343 people volunteered this year to patrol streets to prevent arson at vacant buildings, houses, garages and trash containers.

"A lot of that had to do I think with planning with the diligence and involvement of people in our community. People came out and didn't take a back seat. They were not afraid to challenge people, not afraid to ask questions and I think all of that helped," Bing said.

Detroit gained notoriety during the 1980s when vandals delighted in starting fires across the city. The night before Halloween has been called "devils' night" but Detroit refers to it as "angels' night."
