Alex Avila helps out at Hudsonville Summer Extravaganza

Ice cream social benefits Detroit Tigers Foundation

DETROIT – Baseball fans and ice cream lovers mingled Wednesday in downtown Detroit for the Hudsonville Summer Extravaganza.

The ice cream social was open to the public at Campus Martius park.

Detroit Tigers All Star catcher Alex Avila scooped up some fun along with PAWS and the DTE Energy Squad.

Avila said his rehab is coming along "great."

"Hopefully, today will be my last day in Toledo and I'll back with the team tomorrow," Avila said.

Local 4's own Rhonda Walker also stopped by to help.

The event benefitted the Detroit Tigers Foundation, which aims at developing and funding programs that focus on youth, education and recreation.

"As players, we want to show the people that we're not just players, we're not here from out of town trying to play baseball. We really care about the community and want people to not only enjoy coming to the game but know that we're a part of the family here in Detroit," Avila said.

Local 4 also caught up with the wife of Detroit Tigers' Phil Coke.

"Pretty much nonstop we're really involved in the community in a bunch of different ways," Bobbie Coke said.
