Prince William gave Kate Middleton the same 18-carat sapphire surrounded by diamonds that his father had given Diana Spencer. Back in 1981, the ring cost $60,000 and many criticized Diana for selecting a ring that anyone could buy, rather than having one made for her. William said he wanted to give his mother's engagement ring as his own way to include her in the celebration. He proposed to Kate on a trip to Kenya after "literally" carrying the ring with him everywhere for three weeks—in his rucksack, of all places—saying he knew he would be "in big trouble" if he lost it. In their first interview after getting engaged, Kate said she hopes she can "look after" the ring properly, to which William responded "she's going to be in big trouble if she loses it."
