5 Wayne County Sheriff's deputies charged with beating inmates at Wayne County Jail

Assaults investigated by Wayne County internal affairs unit

DETROIT – Five Wayne County deputies were charged Tuesday with assaulting several inmates in the Wayne County Jail.

In each case, the alleged victims had to be taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The alleged assaults happened in the Division 1 facility at 570 Clinton.

There are no security cameras in that facility.

Deputies accused in assaults

  • Wayne County Deputy Alan Oliver. Oliver was allegedly involved in 3 inmate assaults.
  • Wayne County Deputy Jeffrey Hill. Hill was allegedly involved in the assault of 2 inmates.
  • Wayne County Deputy Matthew Czarnecki. Czarnecki was involved in 2 inmate assaults
  • Wayne County Deputy Brian Milano. Milano is accused of being involved in assaulting 1 inmate.
  • Wayne County Deputy Marcus Hall. Hall is accused of assaulting 1 inmate.

Deputies facing several charges

The Wayne County Deputies face a slew of criminal charges, including assault with intent to do great bodily harm, common law offenses, false report of a felony, and aggravated assault.

The Wayne County Jail assaults that led to the criminal charges happened on October 10, 2009, January 25, 2010 and February 6, 2010.

The investigation by Wayne County Sheriff's internal affairs division usually take about 60 days to complete. These warrant requests were submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor's office two years ago.

Deputies were still on the job

All of the accused deputies have remained on the job during the investigation, per their union contracts, because they had not been charged with any crimes until Tuesday.

What's next

Bail for all of the deputies was set between $5,000 and $15,000. Their next court date is July 9.

All of the victims have been interviewed and their testimony could be used if the men are ordered to stand trial.
