2 teens shot in west Detroit after stealing van

Teens in stable condition while police investigate

DETROIT – Detroit police detectives are trying to figure out what took place at the intersection of Beechwood and Pacific on the city's west side just after 5 a.m. Monday.

The victims -- a 17-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl -- aren't being forthcoming with details of the timeline of events. What investigators do know is the teens snuck out last night, stole a van and ended up with gunshot wounds.

The teens told police a black man came up to them and started firing shots, hitting the 17-year-old in the shoulder and the 14-year-old in the leg.

Carl Jenkins said gunshots are an all-too-common sound in this neighborhood.

"I always react because we have four little ones in my family. Just by having children around makes me react," he said.

Police say the shooting victims were with five other juveniles at the time of the shooting. Investigators want to hear from them to find out what they were all up to overnight and who pulled the trigger.

"Surprising just to ride up and start shooting. It is always some other thing. Ain't no telling one side or the other side of the story," said Brian, a neighbor.

The teens are in stable condition. Police have located the owner of the stolen vehicle.
