Monroe teen crashes stolen car into liquor store to get inside

Boy took van from home

MONROE, Mich. – Police say a 13-year-old boy from Monroe stole a vehicle from his home Friday morning and used it to crash into the front door of a liquor store in order to get inside.

At about 4:14 a.m., the boy crashed into Frenchtown Liquor Store at 3616 North Dixie Highway in Monroe. When police arrived, an officer saw the suspect trying to flee the scene in a dark-colored van. The officer chased the van northbound on North Dixie Highway and stopped it just south of Pointe Aux Peaux Road.

The boy was lodged at the Monroe County Youth Center.

The teen's aunt said the family left alcohol out after Thanksgiving dinner. After the family went to bed, the teen drank what was left out and took his mother's van to the liquor store.

The same teen broke into the same liquor store in September when he stole 91 items, including many bottles of alcohol. The store took a $2,000 loss and the teen got off with probation.

The theft Friday morning was caught on camera. It shows the teen rushing to grab bottles of alcohol.

He likely won't get probation this time. The store sustained $5,000 in damage before he fled Monroe County Sheriff's Deputies.
