DETROIT – The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has shut down 132 counterfeit goods websites for selling fake products to customers.
ICE worked with five European countries to seize the domain names of the websites to shut them down.
Counterfeit products ranged from fake versions of the Ergo Baby Carrier to DVDs and fake professional sports jerseys.
Federal agents bought and tested the products to confirm they were counterfeit before shutting down the websites.
Many of the businesses were based in China.
"The one thing we tell people is that the cheapest prices is not always necessarily the best, and you don't know what you're getting. We advise people to shop authorized retailers because you can be assured you are going to get a genuine product there," said John Holmes, assistant special agent in charge.
The next step is to actually seize the counterfeit products from the companies that have been shut down.
