11-year old killed in I-96 accident

Semi driver was uninjured

DETROIT – An 11-year old child was killed Saturday night when a semi struck his family's broken down vehicle on I-96.

The 2006 Volvo semi was traveling westbound in the right lane of I-96 at about 8:35 p.m., and the driver, a 37-year old man from Leslie, didn't see a broken down 1998 Lincoln Navigator ahead of him in the lane. The semi driver tried to avoid the Navigator at the last moment, but rear-ended it on the left side. Continuing westbound, the semi crashed into the median wall and a light pole.

One adult and three children, all from Detroit, were in the car when it was hit. A fifth family member was outside of the vehicle at the time of the crash. All three children, ages 11, 1 and 4 months, were taken to Children's Hospital in Detroit. The 11-year old was pronounced dead from injuries at the hospital, despite being administered CPR by troopers on the scene.

The other two children were treated for non-life threatening injuries, and the adults were treated on scene and didn't need additional treatment from the hospital. The semi driver was uninjured.

I-96 was closed at Davison from 8:50 p.m. until about 11:30 p.m. after the crash. Both toddlers were restrained in child seats, but it appears that the 11-year old was unrestrained at the time of the crash.

Alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor in this accident.
