DETROIT – Michigan Senator Carl Levin announced Wednesday a federal grant meant to help prevent the Detroit Fire Department from having to lay off more than 100 firefighters.
The city of Detroit will receive a $22.5 million grant from the Department of Homeland Security's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Program.

"It is vital that we maintain the fire protection our citizens need, even during times of tight budgets," Levin said in a news release. "This grant will help keep firefighters on the job and protecting the people of Detroit."
On Monday, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing said 164 firefighters would be laid off by the end of July.
Bing said his administration had "every expectation" of being awarded a federal grant to rehire 108 of the firefighters. The Fire Department is still expected to lay off 56 firefighters by the end of July.
