Local 4 News Today team at Race for the Cure

DETROIT – There was a sea of pink at Chene Park in Detroit this Saturday, May 16, for the 24th annual Komen Detroit Race for the Cure. And Local 4 was proud to be a Media Partner, in addition to participating in this important community event. WDIV's morning team - Rhonda Walker, Evrod Cassimy, Brandon Roux and Ashlee Baracy – broadcast live from the event starting at 6 a.m.

Baracy was the emcee for the Closing Ceremony. It's a cause dear to her heart because her mother is a breast cancer survivor.

There was a new Race route for runners this year, along the scenic Detroit Riverwalk. Walkers traveled along E. Jefferson, like last year. The 5K walk and competitive 5K run brought thousands of people together to celebrate and support breast cancer survivors, people living with the disease and to honor the memory of loved ones in the hopes of ending breast cancer. It was a family event. Adults and kids of all ages were at the Race.

Seventy-five percent of the proceeds go to screening, treatment support and education programs for medically underserved people in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, providing life-saving services to women and men. That added up to $900,000 last year. The remaining 25 percent funds national breast cancer research grants awarded to scientists. That total last year was more than $200,000.
