Report: Gordie Howe walking under own power

DETROIT – Gordie Howe is up and walking under his own power, according to John Fraser of the Saskatoon Media Group.

Gordie's son, Marty, told Fraser his 86-year-old father is scheduled to attend the Kinsmen Sports Celebrity Dinner in Saskatoon, Sask., on Feb. 6. Howe spent most of his childhood in Saskatoon.

Other hockey legends, including keynote speaker Wayne Gretzky, will be in attendance.

Howe has been resting at his daughter's home in Texas after suffering several strokes in the past couple of months. He has lived with his children since the death of his wife, Colleen, in 2009 and has battled the effects of dementia for several years.

"Mr. Hockey" was the NHL's most valuable player six times and played on four Stanley Cup championship teams in Detroit during a 25-year stint that began in 1946.
