The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Riley Sheahan to a $1.9 million, two-year contract.

Detroit completed the deal with the restricted free agent Tuesday just before he potentially could have gotten offers from other teams.

In a breakout season, the 22-year-old Sheahan had nine goals and 24 points in 42 games in 2013-14 for the Red Wings after playing one game for them in each of the previous two years.

Detroit drafted him No. 21 overall in 2010. He played 72 games with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins in 2012-13, scoring 16 goals and 20 assists. He had another 16 points in 24 playoff games that season, helping the Griffins win the Calder Cup.

He had 18 points in 31 games with the Griffins this past season before joining the Red Wings full-time.

Sheahan played college hockey for Notre Dame.
