Red Wings prospect Axel Holmstrom ties Sedin twins' playoffs points record

Detroit may have drafted another gem in late round

Detroit Red Wings prospect Axel Holmstrom has tied the Sedin twins for the most points by a junior in the Swedish Hockey League playoffs.

Daniel and Henrik Sedin scored 14 points for Modo during the 2000 playoffs. Holmstrom, 18, just scored his 14th with Skelleftea AIK.

Detroit selected the Swedish forward in the 7th round (196th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He has no relation to former Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom, who also came up from the Swedish league.

Axel Holmstrom could be the next feather in the Red Wings scouting cap. He scored 18 points in 16 games with Sweden's U-18 team in 2013-14 and another 7 points in 11 games with the U-20 team this season. He was at the Red Wings prospect camp this past summer.

It's well known the Red Wings have had an eye for drafting players late -- real late. Examples: Pavel Datsyuk (Round 6, 171th overall in 1998 NHL Entry Draft); Henrik Zetterberg (Round 7, 210th overall in 1999 NHL Entry Draft); Gustav Nyquist (Round 4, 121st overall in 2008 NHL Entry Draft).

That's just a few from a growing list.

Of course, things change when players make the transition to the North American leagues, but to be mentioned in the same sentence as the Sedin twins says something. They've done pretty well since crossing the pond.
