Mike Babcock expected to announce decision this week

Red Wings coach's future expected to be known by end of this week

DETROIT – Will he stay or will he go?

Mike Babcock's next coaching job is expected to be known to the world at some point this week.

The highly-coveted hockey coach will meet with Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland on Monday before he makes any decision about where he'll be coaching next year, according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

About a week ago Holland granted Babcock permission to shop around and talk to other GMs. He's reportedly talked with several, though not many details are clear. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres reportedly filed for permission to receive draft pick compensation if they do hire the coach.

Babcock officially becomes a free agent when his contract expires on June 30. Holland has said repeatedly he wants Babcock to be in Detroit if it's where the coach wants to be.

Dreger and others have reported Babcock and Holland have been talking during their trip to the Czech Republic for the World Hockey Championship, a tournament in which Red Wings prospects -- including the University of Michigan's Dylan Larkin -- have competed.

Babcock has been behind the Red Wings' bench the past 10 seasons. The team won the Stanley Cup under his leadership in 2008 and returned to the finals in 2009. He also won two consecutive gold medals with the Canadian Olympic team in 2010 and 2014.

Whether he signs with Detroit or another team, Babcock is expected to become the highest paid coach in NHL history.
