Flashpoint: Plan B for Michigan roads, Mackinac Policy Conference

DETROIT – Guy Gordon took the reins of this week's episode of Flashpoint, which kicked off with a conversation about Michigan roads and what Plan B offers the people of Michigan.

Nolan Finley of the Detroit News called Plan B a "Plan BS" and said that the plan includes "fantasy money." He doesn't think the proposed plan will be taken back to the drawing board, and sees Michigan restarting from where it was in the lame duck period.

Kim Trent of the Wayne State Board of Governors said that she did vote yes for Prop. 1 because she was worried about the government's response to its fall.

Paul Welday, a republican strategist, said that ultimately, Gov. Rick Snyder needs to lay out a plan and build a consensus around it. Free Press writer Stephen Henderson said this is a big test for Snyder. Henderson called him "an immature leader" and thinks that a more experienced governor would have nailed down a stronger plan by now.

The entire panel offered their thoughts and predictions on what comes next. You can watch the entire first segment in the video posted above.

In the second segment, the conversation turned to the prevailing wage, what that means and how it could affect metro Detroit.

Henderson says it's a part of the economic ladder. Finley used Ohio as an example of how a state can save money on schools.

Michigan's economy was built on middle class families, Trent said. She talked about how the gap between classes has been widening for a long time.

The panel debated the benefits and dangers of the prevailing wage and how it can affect the number of jobs and wages in those jobs.

After a break, Detroit Regional Chamber President and CEO Sandy Baruah joined Guy to talk about the Mackinac Policy Conference.

Baruah first took a look back at the 2014 conference and how they followed up on their promises. He said he outlined four things for the year in 2014 and all four were taken care of.
He then moved on to address the speakers at the conference and what to expect this year.
