Flashpoint: Breaking down the upcoming presidential race

DETROIT – This week's edition of Flashpoint with Devin Scillian began with a roundtable discussion about the presidential race.

Nolan Finley of the Detroit News said a very vigorous campaign is playing out in front of us and that the Republican Party has some very impressive candidates in the race.

"I think it's going to be a very interesting campaign season," Finley said.

He also said Donald Trump matters to the media but does not matter in the presidential race.

Stephen Henderson of the Free Press said the question is whether the fringe candidates take attention away from the legitimate candidates.

Portia Roberson, of the Detroit Ethics & Civil Rights Division, talked about the impact of Trump's outlandish statements on the other Republican candidates.

Lena Epstein, General Manager of Marketing at Vesco Oil, says that Trump's involvement in the race is bringing in an interesting perspective and drawing the attention of people.

In the second segment, Devin asked Roberson about the role of women in this presidential race.

Roberson said the key to drawing minorities and women to your party is to examine your policies and make sure they are appealing towards those demographics.

Epstein said the issue of equality for women isn't an issue that can be solved politically. She thinks it starts in the community, in the schools, for example.

After the break, Devin was joined by Craig Fahle from the Detroit Land Bank.

Fahle talked about housing and building in Detroit and the process for people hoping to buy in the city. He said it's not as simple as people from other cities may think because many of the homes need to be renovated and fixed up.

He also talked about how the banks tie into the housing landscape whether buying a house can even offer a cheaper monthly payment than renting.
