Detroit bands cover Detroit music at Detroit by Detroit

4th annual Detroit by Detroit show takes place Feb 22

DETROIT – For the 4th year in a row, Detroit by Detroit is heading to the Magic Stick to honor Detroit artists of the past and present. Local acts will be covering their favorite Detroit musicians including Aretha Franklin, Madonna, and the Temptations.

The event started in 2011, as an April Fool's show, but has now turned into an annual showcase.

"I'm so happy that its caught on," event organizer Melissa Rowe told us. "Detroit artists playing music by other Detroit artists – a true celebration of Detroit music, and the immense talent that we have here. I'm still in shock that 2014 marks our fourth year already, and I'm so thrilled that bands (and fans) are still excited about it – I know I am."

One of the regular acts, Stevie Soul and Omar Aragones, will be covering Detroit folk, rock and soul singer Rodriguez, made famous by the award winning documentary, "Searching for Sugarman." The soulful duo will perform three songs, Sugar Man, The Establishment Blues and Street Boy.

"We love local music, and anytime we have a chance to perform with other local artists, we jump on the opportunity," said Stevie Soul, who provides the drums and scat for the duo through beat boxing.

Aragones expressed how important these events are to the city. "It's important to have a sense of community, and events like this are not just important, but really fun to do."

Rowe also mentioned that this year is a little bit different, as they are now allowing bands to cover any artist they want. "Different line-ups provide for a vast array of memorable moments, and there's always at least one aspect of each DETROIT by DETROIT showcase that's bound to leave some folks speechless. I can't imagine how an event like this would work in Chicago or New York – both tremendously talented cities as well, but our Detroit music community is really something special. "
