Teen heartthrob Justin Bieber has set a new YouTube record, becoming the first person to reach 2 billion pageviews on the video-sharing site.

Bieber's Vevo-hosted content, which is also an official channel on YouTube, had racked up more than 5 million additional views since passing the milestone sometime over the weekend, according to social media monitoring company Famemount.

The 17-year-old Canadian surpassed Lady Gaga's record after she became the first music artist to reach 1 billion views on YouTube in October 2010.

He tweeted: "i love my fans and i love music. thank u 4 helping me share my dream with all of u. proud of this album. hope u like it. UnderTheMistletoe (sic)"

Bieber was discovered on YouTube in 2008 by Scooter Braun, who later became his manager, after posting videos of himself singing cover songs at age 12. He was eventually signed to Usher's record label.
