Chevrolet brings diesel power to small car

Chevrolet is putting a different kind of power behind its small Cruze sedan.

On Thursday, the company showed off the new Cruze Diesel Turbo at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show.

Inside and out, the new version of the Cruze is just like any other Cruze that’s already on sale.

However, the difference is under the hood.  That’s where you’ll find Chevrolet’s 2-liter clean diesel turbo engine.

This is the first time in many years that Chevrolet is selling a diesel version of a small passenger in the United States, though General Motors has sold about half a million diesels in other markets.

One of the main reasons for buying a diesel-powered car is that they tend to get better gas mileage than their gasoline counterparts.  Chevrolet expects the Cruze diesel to get 42 miles per gallon, which is the same as its main competitor, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI.

However, Chevrolet points out the Cruze will have more horsepower and torque than the Jetta, and it will have a lower starting price than the Jetta.

If you’ve been waiting for a small domestic diesel car, the Cruze diesel goes on sale this summer.
