Marine Sergeant from Bay City makes surprise wedding proposal

Couple gets engaged where they shared their first kiss 2 years prior

CLARKSTON, Mich. – DTE Energy Music Theatre has been making memories for millions of concert-goers over its 40-year history. On May 13, as the venue was empty and undergoing preparations for the start of its 2012 season, it allowed a couple to turn what was a memory into something much more significant – a wedding date.

Marine Sergeant Paul Wellman of Bay City, Michigan contacted Palace Sports & Entertainment with the idea of proposing marriage to his girlfriend Katy Palmucci in the same seats they shared their first kiss less than two years ago.

Arrangements were made and Wellman led his blind-folded girlfriend into the venue and down into the pavilion where he removed her blind-fold, got down on one knee, slipped a ring on her finger and proposed. Happily, she said yes.

Wellman and Palmucci became friends when they were seventh graders at Christa McAuliffe Middle School in Bay City. Although they endured a long-distance relationship after she moved to Saline, Michigan, their friendship still flourished.

On July 18, 2010, the two attended DTE Energy Music Theatre to see the Goo Goo Dolls in concert. As the band performed its hit single "Iris," the couple kissed for the first time and the relationship blossomed

The couple is still involved in a long-distance relationship as Wellman is finishing his six-year hitch in the Marines in June and currently attends Saginaw Valley State University working on a Secondary Education degree while Palmucci currently attends the University of New England in Portland, Maine, working on her doctorate in Physical Therapy.
