Katrina Hancock: Gleaners Community Food Bank

DETROIT – Most of us never miss a meal.

Most of us never know what it is like to be hungry. Today I was able to go to Gleaners Community Food Bank and watch volunteers from Bank of America and Enterprise Rent-A-Car teach their children how to volunteer.

One young lady, 12 year old Parker Wickens, came with her father Scott and was volunteering for the very first time. She was surprised how hot it was in the facility, but was happy to lend a helping hand by sorting apples.

Gleaners relies heavily on their 30,000 volunteers each year to keep their operating costs down, to provide more food for needy families.

In the month of May alone, 913 volunteers moved, packed, and sorted 629,731 pounds of food which provided 484,408 meals. What a tremendous service to our community!

If you would like to volunteer or get your corporation involved, go to their website at www.gcfb.org. Gleaners serves Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, and Livingston Counties six days a week.
