The first annual Hands4Detroit,will be held to help drive out hunger in the city.

On Saturday, October 6th volunteers in Detroit will distribute food, organize a local food pantry and clothing closet, paint area homes, spruce up local parks, assist in neighborhood cleanup and more.

This community event is organized by 82 local United Methodist churches.

"We all know the recent economic downturn has been especially tough on Detroit, but Motown is our town," said the Rev. Melanie Carey, event coordinator. "It's a place rich with culture, pride, heritage and possibility. If we all lend a hand, we can help alleviate the worry and uncertainty which thousands of individuals, families and children face who hunger for basic necessities like enough food to eat. Hands4Detroit is a celebration of service and love, and an opportunity to come together to create a better city for all of us."

Organizers say more help is needed and transportation to individual service sites will be provided. Childcare is also available.

If you want to help out by volunteering or by making a donation visit Hands4Detroit.org for more information.

After the food drive a celebration of music, art and poetry will take place at Detroit Metropolitan United Methodist Church at 12:30 p.m.
