Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit launches mentorship campaign
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit announced it has launched its annual "100 Mentors in 100 Days" campaign for National Mentoring Month.
Its sixth year running, the campaign's theme this year is "Start Something: Engage. Inspire. Invest." The goal of the campaign, the group says, is to meet the ever growing need for an increased number of mentors, particularly men.
"Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit is a dynamic organization making great impact through mentoring in the metro Detroit area," said Percy L. Wells, Region Vice President, Public Affairs & Communications.
According to the organization, the campaign will run through April 9. It will launch with a Youth Violence Prevention Summit entitled "Mentoring and Violence Prevention: What works," featuring as the keynote speaker Barbara McQuade, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan.
This year's campaign, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company, includes a fundraising goal of $60,000.
"Coca-Cola is committed to making a difference and enhancing the lives of the communities we touch and our support of the '100 Mentors in 100 Days' Campaign is just one example of that," said Wells.
Supporters are asked by the organization to become mentors or recruit mentors and give dollars to help offset costs of the organization's ongoing mentoring programs the first 100 days of the year.
"Each January, we celebrate people who volunteer to mentor children for National Mentoring Month," said BBBSMD, President and CEO, Dara Munson. "We strive to kick the year off in a BIG way by providing even more mentors for our young people."
The campaign will complete in April during Volunteer Appreciation Week, in which, according to BBBSMD, old and new mentors will be celebrated for their commitment to tri-county area youth.
