We’ll admit it–we’re still a little bit in denial that summer is (unofficially) over. Gone are the days of weekends at the beach and living in our bathing suits. And pretty soon, al fresco dining will be a distant dream. Sigh.
But with the passing of Labor Day comes a month dedicated to just the cure we need to zap our end-of-summer blues and center our minds and bodies: September is National Yoga Month!
In 2008, the Department of Health and Human Services designated September as National Yoga Month with the intention of educating people about the many health benefits of practicing yoga and how it can complement a healthy lifestyle. If you’ve been curious about trying yoga (or if you’re a practicing yogi), you can celebrate National Yoga Month by taking free yoga classes for a week this month at over 2,200 yoga studios nationwide. We’re happy to see that our government is giving yoga the props it deserves so that people all over the country can discover its numerous benefits.
While I don’t practice yoga nearly as much as I’d like to, one of my favorite poses is the seated spinal twist. Whenever I’m feeling bloated and crampy or my digestion is out of whack from a few too many rooftop bar cocktails and BBQ food, this move almost instantly makes me feel better. It’s also a great stretch for the shoulders, hips, neck and back and increasing flexibility in the spine.
Here’s how to do the seated spinal twist at home:
- Begin seated on a mat or blanket with your legs extended.
- Cross your right foot over the outside of your left thigh and bend your left knee. Keep your right knee pointed directly up at the ceiling.
- Place your left elbow to the outside of right knee with your palm parallel and facing away from you. Place your right hand on the floor behind you, just behind your butt.
- While keeping both sides of your butt on the floor, exhale and twist to the right as far as you can, keeping your core tight and moving from your abdomen. Turn your head to the right to feel a stretch in your neck.
- Hold for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Switch sides and repeat.
