Ferris State sits atop men's hockey polls

Michigan not far behind top-ranked Ferris State

DETROIT – The Ferris State Bulldogs are ranked No. 1 in the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls.

That puts them ahead of some lofty competition including Boston University, Boston College, Michigan and Michigan State -- teams that are commonly among the NCAA's best in men's Division I hockey.

The Bulldogs (20-8-4) are beating everyone. Back-to-back wins this past weekend over Notre Dame put Ferris State farther ahead of Western Michigan and Michigan for the top spot in the CCHA. Western is two points behind.

Notre Dame was held to just one goal in those two games. Ferris posted it's fourth team shutout of the season.

With a parody-riddled season in the works, the CCHA is full of teams vying for that illusive top spot. But Ferris is showing it can be achieved with stingy defense and an opportunistic offense.

Up next for the Bulldogs is a reeling Bowling Green squad (9-18-5) which sits at the bottom of the CCHA. They travel to Big Rapids for a Friday night game in a place where Ferris has lost just one game in regulation this season -- the best home record in the NCAA (12-1-2).

Boston College, Boston University, Minnesota-Duluth and Michigan all round out the top five in the polls.

Michigan (18-10-4) is right behind Ferris in the overall standings. Michigan State (16-12-4) is not far behind. Western (15-12-5) has faired better in conference play (12-9-3-3) than overall.
