Social media etiquette at the gym

Are you one of those people who overshares on social media? Or maybe you are sick of reading your Facebook friends posts about their latest workout triumphs?

Etiquette experts say many of us are guilty of posting too much information when it comes to their daily workouts. But experts say it is possible to find a balance in sharing your accomplishments and inspiring your friends.

"Updating at the gym you have to be very careful. If you have just accomplished some awesome physical feat, like you just completed a marathon go ahead and share it, that's awesome. But if you're that person, who everyday is like 'Blasted my pecs today,' that's going to be something that's probably going to annoy your friends." said Social Media Expert Randi Zuckerberg.

That is not the only bad behavior this media savvy professional sees when people combine social media with shaping up.

"It's really a don't to have a full blown conversation on a treadmill," said Zuckerberg.

Sharing is Caring

So, is there a positive way to share your workout challenges and support your friends? Actually, there are some apps for that!

"One of my favorite apps is an app call Nike Plus. It tells your friends that you're going for a run and anytime they like the update it cheers for you in your ear," said Zuckerberg." Someone likes the status and you hear 'woohoo' and you feel like Rocky."

And if you have been thinking about getting a personal trainer but are unsure of where to start, there is now an app for that.

The app is called Skimble and it puts the trainer in the palm of your hand.

"It will actually customize an entire workout and walk you through it." Zuckerberg said.

Need a little encouragement to start working out? The app Gym Pack will give you money and prizes if you meet your fitness goals at the end of the week.

"There are scales that you can get on right now that will tweet your weight out," said Zuckerberg, "So talk about being accountable for fitness and weight loss goals."

The fitness apps don't end there.

If you can't find the motivation to get off the couch and go to the gym, Gym Shamer will post a message on your Facebook page telling all of your friends and followers how lazy you are every time you skip a gym day.

So, the next time you have the urge to post about your workout successes, you might want to think twice and look to these apps instead.
